Mah Jongg for Beginners

For those who never heard of Mah Jongg until their friend asked if they wanted to join. This introductory course takes you from zero knowledge, to knowing the tiles, how to read the National Mah Jongg League Card, how to set up a game, the Charleston, game play, and more! In this class we typically play 2-3 games. All participants receive an instructional guide, tile guide, and practice playing card to take home.

You took the beginner class, and now you’re ready take those skills and build your confidence at the table. This is the follow-up class to Mah Jongg for Beginners. We will review the basics, and start playing right away. I will walk you through game set up, the deal, Charleston, and be on stand by to answer any questions that come up throughout. Leave with a newfound confidence sitting at the table and playing independently.

Strategy

You’ve learned the basics and are feeling comfortable at the table: now it’s time to take your skills up a notch. In this class we will discuss how to master the NMJL card, charleston strategies, and offensive and defensive strategies. This class consists of numerous exercises to help you build the skills needed to play smarter when it counts.

You’re feeling comfortable at the table, and now you’re wanting to learn more about how to score and incorporate playing with money. This class, presented in partnership with Michelle from Cypress Mahjong, covers how to score winning hands, the bonuses and the penalties depending on the different game outcomes. We’ll discuss league and tournament scoring, along with popular house rules.

Siamese Mah Jongg

Two players, two racks: first person to win two mah jonggs wins! I will teach you the official rules of Siamese Mah Jongg, created by Gladys Grad in 2015. We will discuss the differences and similarities between NMJL and Siamese, and we’ll discuss Royale Siamese and Imperial Siamese, too! Participants must know how to play Mah Jongg to attend a Siamese class.

A beginner mahjong experience for kids and their favorite grown-up.

Pick your person. Name your team. Learn something new together. Player One & Player Two is a 2.5-hour beginner mahjong class for kids ages 7–13 and the adult they want by their side. No experience needed — you're both starting from zero, and that's exactly the point.

You and your teammate will share a rack, learn the basics of American Mahjong together, and leave with a real understanding of the game — plus a practice playing card and take-home instructions so you can keep playing long after class ends.

It's collaborative, low-pressure, and genuinely fun for both players at the table.

Who counts as a team? Anyone you want. Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, older siblings, family friends, guardians — if they're your person, they're your Player Two. (Or your Player One. You decide.)

Come play your favorite new game, and meet some new friends! I provide all the mah jongg equipment, come with your card ready to play. I’ll be on site to answer questions as needed.
